Music is such a powerful source of life. No matter where I am in this world I can listen to a song and it can take me to a different place. I can be sad and music can take me to a place of happiness. If I am feeling lazy I put on an upbeat song and somehow I get filled with energy. I can be stressed out and put on a Ray LaMontagne song and it will take me to a place of serenity. If I feel lonely I put on a song that reminds me of those closest to me like a Salt N' Pepa song, the Ball N' Chain song by Social D, Gimme that Nut by Eazy E, Steve Miller Band, All Good by De La Soul and the list goes on; the songs take me to the happy memories I share with those who the songs remind me of. For me, nothing else in this world does what music does for my soul. So quickly can lyrics bring tears, a smile, some comfort and/or inspiration to me. Just now I was listening to an Estelle song and it inspired me to write this. So much of my writing is triggered by listening to a song. Music is a form of communication. Music is poetry. I'm not trying to define what music is here cause as Elvis Costello has perfectly put it, "writing about music is like dancing about architecture.” I am just sharing what music does for me. I've been blessed to have been exposed to many different genres of music growing up and throughout my life. I think this exposure has helped me to be able to really appreciate all music even if I may not like it. People's conception of music and especially "good" music doesn't always match, but what makes music so beautiful is that there is different stories being told in different ways and there is always something for everyone.
Today, I am grateful for music cause in times of loneliness it brings me comfort.
